As an ophthalmologist this test, this device helps me, but not in the usual way. Most new devices that someone is purchasing, the sales representative will come in and tell you how many you have to do in order to pay off the machine in a month or in six months or in a year. That is not what is happening here, you have to be a little bit more indirect in the same way that topographers years ago. No one wanted the machines because we thought they were superfluous. There was no payment to the surgeon or to the ophthalmologist for this testing and now we are trying to convince people to buy this device. Topographers now are everywhere. They need to be everywhere and many of us have more than one and always suspect that the functional vision analyser will take the same pathway. Right now, we cannot assign a financial value or how much you are going recoup by investing in this and bringing it into your office. I will tell you that I got strange looks when I brought these machines, I brought one for my two largest locations and after about a week everyone started to catch on to what was beneficial. We have more patients than you can imagine walking in with 20/30, 20/25 vision who want to know what they do about their vision. If you test them with this machine they will notice how poorly they see and when you test them postoperatively they can recognize how much better they are. We cannot use Snellen acuity as this sufficient measure anymore. It was a brilliant idea, still is a brilliant idea and it will continue for years to come, but we need this adjunct in the same way that we need topography to add to our knowledge of K readings.
