20/20 is Not Enough

The first common vision testing myth is 20/20 means good vision. Nothing could be further from the truth. Much scientific evidence exists since the 1960s to show that people can have 20/20 vision and still have a serious loss of contrast and the work I did, for example, while doing my Ph.D. I made the first mathematical relationships between how we letters on the eye chart to the contrast sensitivity curve and once you see that you realize scientifically why 20/20 is not enough and your visual acuity is a very insensitive measure. It makes about as much sense to say 20/20 is good vision as it is to go down to your city's orchestra and the orchestra is front of you and you have the orchestra violins play one high frequency note very loud and then someone says so what do you think about our orchestra, and you say, “Well, the violin sounds good with one note, what about the rest of the orchestra? You know, the woodwinds, what about the drums, and the cellos, etc.?” And they say “No, just listen to the violins”. That is exactly what is going on today when we report a person’s vision with one number like 20/20. It is just very incomplete.
