Today's standard for vision testing, the Snellen chart, which is the letter chart with black letters on white background, that goes back actually 1862. It was developed in Utrecht, Holland by Dr. Hermann Snellen. So when we were fighting our civil war here in the United States that is when that chart was developed, very old technology.
