By itself, low-contrast sensitivity is not sufficient to justify cataract surgery. The indication for cataract surgery is not nearly an objective measurement of visual acuity by whatever means. The criteria include:
1. Poor vision: That is best corrected visual acuity is 20/50 or worse, alternately 20/40 or
worse when glare is key.
2. Dysfunction: The patient cannot perform the normal activities of daily living.
3. Diagnosis: There is objective evidence of a cataract that is reducing vision.
4. Prognosis: There’s a good chance that cataract surgery will restore vision and allow the patient to function normally.
5. Health: The patient can withstand the stresses of cataract surgery as well as anesthesia.
6. Awareness: The patient can appreciate surgery and give informed consent.
