NOW PLAYING: Confirming Visual Loss

I think if a patient is not complaining or if you can evoke a verbal complaint from your patient it is going to be hard to use contrast sensitivity as a justification for surgery, but if the patient is giving you modest complaints of visual function you need to take into a counter personality because some people complain and some people don’t. I had a very nice lady on Thursday of this week who walked in with 20/20, 20/25 vision and told me that her vision was not as good as it had been and she was pretty mild in her description of her visual loss and I realized that was the case for the Functional Vision Analyzer. At the end of the test, the patient looked at me and was almost joyful, “I knew I could not see the way I used to. I knew I was not imagining things,” and she has been signed up for surgery and I have absolutely no doubt that her visual function is limited and the surgery is appropriate.
