Well there are a lot of diseases that affect the vision that if left untreated can create a lot of problems; one is a cataract. Some doctors might see a cataract and say it is a trace cataract or give it 1+ or 2+. The reality is the patient’s contrast is compromised and frankly I do want to be in the road in the patient’s driving especially at night. Glaucoma is another key problem. Glaucoma historically has been looked at in terms of field loss and is looked at in terms of intraocular pressure. It is also looked at now today with neural imaging, but the reality is what needs to be known is how is the glaucoma affected the contrast process in the visual system and that is the contrast sensitivity causing and the doctors will take patients on and off medication based on the contrast sensitivity function of the curve and I have done work with doctors at Stanford showing that even though patients had field loss various types, they all had 20/30 or better, on the fact contrast sensitivity in the night driving stimulator I could shows functionally significant losses safety affects when driving at night with contrast sensitivity that you would not pickup with fields and/or acuity.
